Auctioneers Note: If there ever was an example of a “once in a lifetime” auction sale this one is for you. General Chester Braddock deGavre or “Chet” as he was most referred to was one of the most infamous WWII Airborne Combat Leaders and decorated Brigadier Generals of the 20th Century. Chet was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1907. He served three years in the 102nd Cavalry of the New Jersey National Guard before joining the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he graduated in 1933. From there General deGavre joined the Airborne Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, becoming one of the first Army officers to learn how to parachute at the beginning of World War II. From his position as a parachute training officer, as well as chief of test and development he parachuted from over a dozen types of aircraft not previously used by parachutists—using experimental parachutes and improvised equipment—from low and high altitudes. He was awarded one of the nation’s first Legions of Merit for these pioneering efforts which required both inventiveness and physical courage. He became chief of staff for the 1944 “Operation Dragon” airborne invasion of Southern France. General deGavre was awarded the Silver Star for his bravery as a regiment commander during the Korean War as well as the Legion of Merit with three oak-leaf clusters.
General deGavre met the love of his life Teresa “Tita” Cameron while overseas in England and married in 1948. Together they purchased the 18th Century Wise Plantation home previously owned by the 33rd Governor of Virginia, Henry Wise. General deGavre made various restorations to the home which is now referred to as Deep Creek Plantation. The General had numerous and diverse interests in life: serving with troops in the field, parachuting, playing sports intensively, observing and carving waterfowl. While at Deep Creek Plantation he pursued his great talent for carving miniature waterfowl. As a boy in New Jersey, he carved his own hunting decoys, and later, as an officer in the Army in the field or in combat, he carved miniature birds for relaxation. These were the beginnings of a hobby that was to bring him national acclaim. The General exhibited his work throughout the East Coast in exhibits sponsored by the National Audubon Society in New York City; the Ward Foundation in Salisbury, Maryland; the Waterfowl Festival in Easton, Maryland; the Connecticut Audubon Society in Fairfield; The Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor, New Jersey; and the Arts Festival in Charleston, South Carolina, among others.
During his later years on the Eastern Shore, General deGavre enjoyed moving and restoring old barns and other farm buildings, making reproduction furniture and caring for his farm with its animals and waterfowl. He also served on the vestry and as senior warden of St. James Church in Accomac and as a member of Zoning Appeals Board of Accomack County.

You are responsible for ensuring that you have removed all of your items before leaving the pickup site.
Shipping: A&M Auctioneers and Appraiser’s does not ship items, however shipping is available through the UPS Pack and Ship Store of Salisbury, MD/Delmar, DE or a shipper of buyer’s choice. We can transport items back to our facility from the Auction Pickup site and then deliver the item(s) to a shipper for you for a fee. You will pay the shipper directly for any and all costs associated with getting your items to you. Shipping has become very expensive. We have no control over the cost of shipping items. Please bid accordingly.
